Evening Course - Starting a Small Business

There are many pitfalls in starting a small business and often people find out the hard way. This course introduces you to the basic concepts you need to be aware of and is designed to help you avoid making common mistakes and steer you down the correct path in setting up a small business.

Course Content includes:

  • Business success and failure factors
  • Basic market research
  • Basic marketing
  • Record keeping
  • Cashbook and bank reconciliation
  • Basic accounting
  • Legal structures: sole trader, partnership, company
  • Cashflow forecasting
  • Arranging finance
  • Costing and pricing
  • Taxation

Course Fee:

The course fee is $150 including GST. If two people attend for the same business idea a 50 % discount is offered for the second person i.e $225 for two.

The evening course runs from 7pm to 9pm on Monday and Tuesday evenings over four weeks, a total of 8 sessions. Courses are run throughout the year

Day Course - Starting a Small Business

This is a subsidised course designed to assist eligible job seekers wanting to start their own business. Completing this course is the first step in applying for the Enterprise Allowance, an allowance to help your cashflow for up to a year while you get your business firmly established.

  • Costing and pricing your product or service
  • Advertising and promotion
  • Cashflow forecasting
  • Taxation

Business Grants and Loans

Enterprise Allowance

This provides financial support to people who are eligible under the government-funded self-employment scheme called Enterprise Allowance. You will need to be enrolled as a job seeker with Work and Income and formally apply for the allowance. This will normally require the completion of a relevant small business course and will involve the submission of a business plan to assess the viability of your business idea.

Just Dollars

Is a charitable trust that provides small business loans to start-up or existing small businesses. Just Dollars offers unsecured loans up to $4,000 and secured loans up to $10,000. So if you are thinking about becoming self-employed but don't have any money to get things underway, or are already self-employed but donメt have any money to expand or buy new equipment they could provide the assistance you need.

To apply you will need to be declined finance from your bank and provide a business plan including a cashflow forecast outlining your proposal. Angel Fund

The Angel Fund - Wahine Putea aims to create opportunities that enable low-income women to achieve financial independence. The fund offers no interest loans typically up to $500 to women on low incomes, who have difficulty accessing credit from traditional sources and who have the ability to repay. Loans can be used to cover costs associated with starting a small business, transition to work expenses or for training courses, seminars and further education.

Our confidential business facilitation service is ideal for someone who has a good idea for a business and doesn't know what to do next or where to find the right information.

Our qualified and experienced business facilitators will talk you through the different issues, provide you with relevant information, give you a reality check and get you on track to turning that idea into a reality.

This service costs you $65 plus GST per hour.

You may be able to get free business facilitation advice if you are eligible for subsidised assistance under the government funded Enterprise Allowance scheme. This assistance will be part of the overall service provided under this scheme, which includes business training, business plan preparation and business assessment.
